App Passwords
Separate passwords for Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, mobile apps, and SMTP devices — required for all third-party mail access.
Why app passwords are required
MoovMail uses app passwords for IMAP (read/sync) and SMTP (send), similar to Gmail. Your normal web login password is not accepted in Outlook, desktop mail apps, or mobile mail clients unless an administrator explicitly enables a legacy fallback on the server (not recommended).
Create an app password
- Open Settings → Security in the inbox or visit /settings.
- Under App Passwords, enter a name (e.g. "Outlook laptop").
- Click Generate App Password and copy the value — it is shown once.
- Paste it into your mail client when prompted for the account password.
Where to use app passwords
| Use case | Protocol | Password |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook / Thunderbird / Apple Mail while on MoovMail | IMAP 993 + SMTP 587 | MoovMail app password |
| Android / iOS native mail app | IMAP 993 + SMTP 587 | MoovMail app password |
| Scanner or device sending mail via SMTP | SMTP 587 or 465 | MoovMail app password |
| Export mail when leaving MoovMail | New provider → MoovMail IMAP 993 | MoovMail app password |
Revoke or replace
- Revoke — immediately blocks that client from connecting.
- Replace — generates a new password and revokes the old one. Update the client with the new value.
